Recap of Spring 2012 Haute Couture Collections

Despite the unfortunate event of recession and economy taking a deep dive, the haute couture industry is still going strong, both financially and aesthetically. As an industry that values intricacy and attention to details, this season emphasize the weight of different fabrics and materials. Yes, I do know that New York Fashion Week just started today. No, I don't really care.

Georges Hobeika — Although my favourite quote "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking"does not necessarily apply here, "Flowers? For haute couture spring collection? Groundbreaking" certainly does. All jokes aside, I'm actually in love with the collection since it reminds me so much of the spring 2011 collection of Chanel Haute Couture. I know, I know — so two seasons ago, whatever. Hobeika used details like fake dangling flower pedals to create the illusion of artistically torn and shredded pieces of fabric. Layering pretty fabrics can be really pretty! I would say that this collection is very Great Gatsby-esque but that sounds so stupid when you think about it. After all, pretty embroidery =/= Great Gatsby-inspired.

Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci — Gone were the days of romantic and angelic dresses. Despite being influenced by the Roaring Twenties and the Deco Era, this haute couture collection is very dark, very tough and very unconventional. In another word, very Lisbeth Salander-Rooney Mara. I can practically imagine your automatical-eyeroll at the mention of Rooney but I can't resist — she's a flawless human being! And she has cute dimples too! Moving on, the whole collection is build on crocodile skin, fine silk tulle and jersey along with chunky zippers spreading haphazardly across the fabrics. It's accessorized with "nose rings the size of their face and earrings so heavy they have to be held together by an invisible headband," as Alice of Fashionista.com had described. Embroidered with spikes and beads, it creates a simple silhouette, yet draws attention to the figure at the same time. Fashion can be full of paradoxes sometimes. It's unexpected and far from what I had possibly imagined — perhaps Tisci would continue the romantic direction, I thought naively — but since when was Riccardo Tisci expected and close to what you imagine?

I can't really have anything against this subversive and totally fetch collection other than that annoying basketball in the lower right corner, because now I can't help but imagine these models playing basketball while wearing haute couture. Having a great imagination can be troubling sometimes. ~~Beep beep shameless self-bragging.~~

Stephane Rolland — Sophistication and quirkiness does mix when it comes in a palette of black, white, red and lime green. Despite its lack of any intricate embroidery that takes more than hundreds or hours — as seen in Givenchy — Rolland achieve the same level of delicacy by defining a waist silhouette with shapes on the shoulders and/or the sleeves. Inspired by the art of Michel Deverne, the collection is full of spiral structures and volumes that one tends to associate with pagodas and Asian temples. With the help of fabrics like organza, chiffon and ostrich feathers the assembles are sharp — silhouette-wise — but softened with the help of elegant fabrics. The tasteful gold embellishments and accessories, along with the cutout gloves, are not groundbreaking or anything, are innovative on its own rights. This is like an eye orgasm right there, ugh.

Iris Van Herpen — Think alienated-silhouettes and what do you get? ~~Alexander McQueen spring 2010~~ Iris Van Herpen's spring 2012 haute couture collection, obviously. I mean, duh. "For me fashion is an expression of art that is very closely related to myself and to my body. I see it as my expression of identity combined with desire, mood and cultural setting," said the designer on her work and collections. Looking past the simple, neutral palette, Van Herpen used avant-garde materials such as leather, synthetic boat rigging, Plexiglas or the whalebones of children's umbrellas to create a futuristic collection that highlights the female body with a sculptural effect.

Fashion Universe is Still Not Over Cats

Not that it is a bad thing — I'm a cat lady, remember? Anyway, former-Spice Girl and currently-designer Victoria Beckham had launched her new lower-priced line Victoria, Victoria Beckham this season. To build up hype around the collection, which will be release in mid February by the way *wink wink*, Ms.Victoria had tapped Quentin Jones to directed the fashion film. It's filled with cats, quirkiness and simple dress that would appeal to both girls and women alike. Not surprising, since Beckham had said that “For the Victoria line I wanted to appeal to a slightly younger audience – super chic but with a sense of humour and an edge and that’s exactly what Quentin brought to the creative process. I really wanted to capture the essence of the playful feminine character at the heart of the collection and Quentin has realised that for me in her unique, innovative style.” Perhaps one of the best fashion films in 2012 yet?

Test Tubes Are Not Just for Chemistry

Here the words "test tube," and your mind instantly think of that chemistry class you had aced or failed, or mad scientists from those cheesy movies in the 80s. Same thing to me, until I saw these chandeliers made out of test tubes. Wait, what? That defies all logic! Test tubes are only limited to cosmetic factories in New Jersey and mixing vinegar with baking soda! Wrong wrong wrong!

Designer Pani Jurek thinks that objects should not only be functional, but also engaging in some way. Hence why you should hand test tubes over your head — to put weird things like shiny rocks you pick up from the streets and legitimate unicorn fossils. Or you can just hang plants because ~~you are too cheap to buy real pots~~ it saves space and creates a wonderful environment to live in.

Fine, I admit it — I didn't jump onto the Lana Del Rey bandwagon until Nusardel posted about her(I'm convinced that you're reading this. Um, thanks? I'm so glad that I have a friend with good taste in music?) and "Born To Die" exploded on Tumblr. Now, use your imagination and imagine me watching the videos on her YouTube channel for 23094720 times while silently weeping about quality music these days. ~~Autotuning or talking are not considered as music~~ *side eyes at Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry*

I read this article from New Yorker a while ago and I have a lot of strong ~~feelings~~ thoughts about it, especially these sentences in particular —

"Why is pop music the only art form that still inspires such arrantly stupid discussion? The debates that surround authenticity have no relationship to popular music as it’s been practiced for more than a century. Artists write material, alone or with assistance, revise it, and then present a final work created with the help of professionals who are trained for specific and relevant production tasks. This makes popular music similar to film, television, visual art, books, dance, and related areas like food and fashion. And yet no movie review begins, “Meryl Streep, despite not being a Prime Minister, is reasonably convincing in ‘The Iron Lady.’ ”

Why does people argue about pop music like it's politics? Music is important, but it's not like anyone is going to die or get run over by a car if the artists don't create the songs themselves. Besides you probably listen to music to feel good about yourself, not because it's "cool" or "hipster" or on top of the charts. ~~If you are, then you're probably a hipster-wannabe douchebag who cares too much about what other people thinks.~~ At the end, does the critics' opinion even matter? Can't you make up your own mind whether you like it or not?

That was a long introduction. Here's what I think of the whole album —

Born To Die is very retro, very 50's, very pin-up girl. Although all the songs are slightly repetitive(I still can't tell them apart. Food for thought: it's like Born This Way expect the songs are... different?), they are intriguing without being overly difficult to understand. Soulful without being an Amy Winehouse, or the soundtrack to a James Bond movie. You lot had probably listened to Video Games or Blue Jeans or Born To Die so much times you can't even count, but National Anthem and Off To The Races are surprising dirty. I mean, Lolita references! "Light of my life, fire of my loins!" "Baby, put on heart-shaped sunglasses cause we gonna take a ride." Please excuse my absence while I listen to Dark Paradise and cry for the rest of my life.

Although you should find inspiration in everywhere, it never hurts to have somewhere to be a constant source of creativity. One of my favourite blogs is We Are Glitter, run by Maesie on Tumblr.

What motivated you to start your blog?

Initially, it was my friend Kat who introduced me to Tumblr, I remember looking at all of the blogs and just being really inspired, I’d never really taken and interest to blogs and I only looked in magazines like Vogue or i-D for the pictures (I know) so everything was new and really, really addictive. It just seemed like a brilliant idea to start my own, so I did! I never expected to get the response I’ve gotten from everyone on Tumblr, it’s so overwhelming, but lovely!

Who are your favourite designers and why?

Riccardo Tisci, Alexander McQueen, Miuccia Prada and Alber Elbaz. Alexander McQueen was a visionary; everything he did came from somewhere deep within him and all of his work was astonishing. Nothing and no one can or will ever replace him.Riccardo Tisci is just — perfect, his attention to detail is so astute and I’ve loved everything he’s done. I can’t point out a flaw.Alber! He’s just so cute! I love the aesthetics he creates and his shows, and the energy and the cuts of his designs.Miuccia — I don’t need to explain myself, do I?

How would you describe your style?

Clean, I’m sort of a Queen of Basics, I like to keep everything simple, and I’d never go grungy or punk unless it was for a dress up party. I do like to make a statement though; I’ll often wear bright colours and eye-catching pieces because I hate being the same as everyone else, it kills me!

Favourite trend(s) of Spring/Summer 2012?

I still love all of the bright colours featuring on the runway; there is something so chic about intense colours on trousers… I also loved the Aquatic trend that Givenchy, Chanel, Versace, Mary Katrantzou and Giorgio Armani used in their runway. Givenchy was my favourite. I adored the head to toe prints look, especially at Erdem. I liked the pyjamas at Stella McCartney, one of my favourite things to do is chill out in my pj’s… with that collection I can be comfortable and stylish.

When you’re not blogging, what else do you do?

I love to read, so I read when I need to relax, and if its not a book, it is a blog or fashion related website… It [fashion] has become my life! I love to exercise as well, I’m addicted, I’ve such an addictive personality, and it’s really terrible. I also love just being with friends and family, for me it doesn’t get much better than that.

5 essential pieces in your wardrobe are .

A cozy knit — Being comfortable in what you wear is important, I think that having that one knit, that’s worn in and that you can always rely on is an important thing for any girl, (or boy.)

Basic T — If you’re ever stuck for outfit inspiration just turn to your basic tees, white, grey, black, you can’t go wrong pair them with anything, add a bright coloured bag, or jeans and you’ll look effortlessly stylish.

Blazer — Do I even need to explain this essential?

Good pair of heels — Nothing makes you feel more confident that a pair of heels! They make everything look good, (unless they’re kitten heels, if they are please immediately and quietly go and stand in a corner.) Money is never wasted on a pair of shoes that you love!

J Brand jeans — Perhaps the snuggest jeans ever! They come in so many colours giving you a load of outfit choices, you just can’t make a mistake with these jeans, and they are fabulous!

A summer dress — (I know you said 5 but I cheated, I couldn't resist) Waking up after a balmy day out and a cool night and putting on a summer dress is so good! You don’t have to think! It’s something that every girl needs, just so she can have one of those days that are carefree. Just chucking the dress on after swimming in the ocean is such an effortless essential.

SPOTTED: Layering

Remember that post I wrote on layering? You probably do because, well, I just put a link in here. I know I said different materials, different weights — blah blah blah... — but let's look at how real people on the streets do it: with a large, structural coat, mid-length skirt peeking out along with some statement shoes like wedges or creepers. Just add a beanie/tights/clutch and you're done.

And by the way, thanks for 101 followers on Google Friend Connect. I didn't thank you lot in the previous posts because I was too busy complaining about shitty new schedule for the new term — I miss middle school so much...

Hairspiration: Pretty In Pink

Chances are you probably heard of the 18-year old Charlotte Free — the American model with a mass of pink hair that walked just about every catwalk lately. First discovered by a photographer at an arcade in Southern California while playing Bust A Move, Charlotte became the it girl of the season by walking for Vivienne Westwood and had been compared to Kate Moss(and just about every unconventional model that had ever been) because she's only 5'7''

It girl or not, ~~I don't even give a crap~~ I will forever be in love with Charlotte Free and her hair. Although I am still not over my funny-looking red hair yet(which by the way, faded out super-fast since I didn't bleach it, though you can still kinda maybe sort of not really see it) next time I want to dye my hair I certainly now what shade I want.

It turns out that Charlotte had been dying her hair for a few years with a mix of Special Effects in Virgin Rose and Cupcake Pink, along with Manic Panic in Hot Hot Pink and Cotton Candy. Wow, thank a lot, Style.com archive and the nice people on Fashion Spot.

Here Comes Jason Wu for Target

The last time I got this excited for a designer collaboration — it was for Versace for H&M, fall 2011 collection(no cruise collection for us folks in United States, unfortunately, so most of us would probably be running around naked or wearing — ta-da! — Jason Wu for Target ). The clothes are loud, bright and totally fit the aesthetic of Versace and its broad archive, but that's exactly the problem. Look at ADR and you will know that she paid $299 for that leather studded dress(she probably just got it free from the PR team though. I mean, she's Anna fucking Dello Russo) Or that Andy Torres of Style Scrapbook bought the crocodile skirt for $69.99. ~~I swear, I~~ so did not ~~memorize the price list!~~ Same shit for just about every other person on Earth. Not exactly amazing when the whole world knows how much you spend on clothes, although style comes at every price.

Long-sleeved blouses and short, appropriate dresses. Pair with angle socks and lots of structured purses, obviously.

Browse around the Internet and you will realize that Jason Wu had recently designed a collection for Target. If you, like me, have not been living under a rock or something, you will definitely remember the disaster of a collection Mission did for Target last September. The 300+ items collection sold out faster than you could say "zig zags," and the next thing you know people who had ordered online were getting shitty gift cards from Target(Target had recently send out the orders, which just proves how reliable mass-market chain stores are) Jason Wu for Target is a lot tamer, both in size and appearance. Unlike most designer collaborations, it is not a cheaper alternation of the label — "Nothing's replicated from the main line — it has its own voice," said Wu in the February issue of American Vogue on his collaboration with Target.

Stripes don't make you fat if they're designed by Jason Wu ~

Surprisingly, I agree with every one of his words. Look at the recent collections of Jason Wu and you will find lady-like dresses and suits. Comparing to the Target collab, the only thing that is similar are some of the silhouettes, and the similarities end there. Without changing his aesthetic, Wu managed to create a "youthful and flirty"(quotes are being used because the chances of me using "flirty" in real life is less than 0%) collection, and it comes in the form of lightweighted blouses, Peter Pan-collared dresses and mid-length skirts. The offering of accessories doesn't hurt either, with structured floral purses and scarves covered in Milu the cat, the muse behind the collection. My inner cat lady is wiping away tears of happiness and joy. What are the chances of a fashion collection being inspired by a cat, a black cat nevertheless? Or cats not being used as a fetish symbol?

So school girl-like, I just can't comprehend right now ^.^

Chances are you're falling in love with the Jason Wu for Target collection. And so am I. This collab will be available on February 8th and I'm dying due to pure excitement. So, who's in for wearing polka dot blouses and scarves adorned with cats this spring?

Palmer//Harding | White collared shirts

Although a gal can never have enough rainbow dresses or crocheted sandals, it doesn't hurt to go back to the basics once in a while. No matter how strange or trendy your wardrobe is, it should be build on classic and timeless pieces such as white collared shirts and the perfect little black dresses. They are investment pieces! Unlike those giant Peter Pan-collared dresses in neon colours that you just bought! I take back the thought that little black dresses are too classy. As much as we all wish, wearing Levi's cutoffs and eyelet boots forever is not an option. Besides, wearing leopards and harem pants to a job/school interview could be highly risky unless you're the holy moly Man Repeller.

The duo behind Palmer//Harding also agree. Designers Matthew Harding and Levi Palmer are dedicated to recreate this long-neglected white collared shirt instead of designing the typical post-college garb such as party dresses and all. "There seems to be a gap in London to really focus on the garments and the wearer rather than to focus on a show," said the designers in an interview for Dazed Digital. Just because it's a classic piece doesn't mean it can't be innovative either. The designers look to couturiers from the thirties and on for inspiration, because haute couture and collared shirts are very related to each other. I mean, look at the pleating of those shirts! Don't they remind you, just a bit, of the Dior dresses from the early 20th Century?

Humorously, the shirt on the left reminds me a lot of this Gap blouse I had as a kiddo and probably still do. The sleeve length is not too long, too short or too awkward-length. For the collared shirt on the right, however, the attention is directed to the back. The mesh-overlay material manages to hang perfectly on the body without looking clingy or uncomfortable.

Look at this shirt on the right, then look at any of the collared shirts you owned. Look back at the shirt on the right again. What is this, you might think. This is a shirt, darling, with cutouts and a collar. Very avant-garde if you ask me.

Oh lookie, it's the mesh-overlay thingymajigy again! *waits for you to compliment me on my vast amount of vocabulary* Anyway, this shirt is just like the shirt in the first photograph, except it's at a shorter length and different sleeves. The amount of differences lengths can make! Amen to good tailoring and innovative materials!

Still the same shirt silly, just a different silhouette! This shirt in particular feels very Virgin Suicides, but I figure out a way to relate everything to Virgin Suicides so just ignore me!

From Screen to Red-Carpet: Rooney Mara

To say that I love Rooney Mara is like saying Alexander McQueen was a good designer — an understatement, obviously. Ever since the news broke out that she was casted as Lisbeth Salander, the unlikely heroine in Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, people had been thinking about the same thing — how could such a sweet, seemly harmless girl transform into an antisocial hacker? And Rooney did, with the help of costume designer Trish Summerville and David Fincher, also known as the best director known to mankind. I admit I'm being a teensy-bitsy biased because of my love for the Millennium Trilogy, but I can't help it alright it's the best thing that happen to Earth since suspenders.

While filming Dragon Tattoo, Rooney "literally roll out of bed and put on whatever is there. I have really enjoyed being a boy this last year.” It also had a great impact on her personal style, as she leans more toward edgier and more sophisticated clothing rather than the pastels and ruffles she sported in 2009. In a way, Rooney really “absorbed pieces of Lisbeth, but made it into her own style," as Trish Summerville had said. Her style as of right now is not exactly KISS- or Marilyn Manson-inspired, it's just... Rooney adapting into Salander... without even realizing it. Which makes me love her even more ~~if that's possible.~~

Note: I'm still very aggravated by the fact that Meryl Streep won the best actress award at the Golden Globes. I mean, the award is definitely going to help her with her career! Rooney, Tilda or Viola don't need them, they already have like thousands of awards and are running out of shelf space! To be honest though, the Golden Globes are always so predictable and they never take any chances, so I should express feelings for the Oscars instead.

One of the best dresses that Rooney had worn for red carpets is the Givenchy she wore for the world premiere of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in London. It's not exactly a dress from the Haute Couture fall 2011 collection, rather a modified version of several dresses combined. Ugh, Rooney's style right now works perfectly with Riccardo Tisci's aesthetic. It's like a match from heaven except even better! Please excuse me while I weep over the bodice of the dress. And the embroidered neckline. I'm just being overly-enthusiastic but you get the point — didn't I mention the Givenchy Haute Couture looks sophisticate yet modern at the same time? *silently praying that Rooney would wear more Givenchy, and by more I mean more, more, more!"*

The conventional choice for major events is a dress, for most people. A tuxedo, if you're more Annie Hall than Marilyn Monroe. Not for Rooney Mara. Duh. This girl wore a jumpsuit. With slicked back hair and red lips. The cheerful Wednesday Addams inside me is practically squealing with delight! Practical without being too minimalistic. Or look inspired by the late seventies. Ladies and penguins — this is what you should wear for weddings, baby showers, parties, dinner parties, and just about every wretched thing that people in our generation do these days.

According Coco Chanel, every girl needs a perfect little black dress in her wardrobe. I don't because that's too classy, but Rooney does. And it comes in the form of leather and cutouts because when in doubt, wear leather. Leather, leather, and more leather! Without the geometrical cutouts though, Rooney might be mistaken as a member of the Hell's Angel, minus the beer belly and the bushy beard. I really like this outfit because it's athletic yet feminine at the same time, embracing two of the major trends in fashion that never really go away entirely.

I despise the Miu Miu spring 2012 collection so much. I use "despise" because "hate" is a powerful word and we don't need so much negativity in the world(let's hug and all be best friends!) It's almost like Miuccia's designs became too mature for the aesthetics of Miu Miu. The originally-young line had became too old and mature even though the Prada collections are still awesome, which is why I have a love-hate relationship with Rooney in Miu Miu. Oh wait, not so much negativity! It's not exactly statement-making and I didn't realise it was Miu Miu until some bitch on Tumblr point it all.

When I think of headbands, I think of Lavender Brown from the Harry Potter series and certainly not Rooney Mara. However, it works in harmony with minimalistic dresses like the ones from Michael Kors pre-fall 2012 especially when it's not patterned. As much as Rooney looks wonderful and aspiring and very fetch in black, it could get boring sometimes...

Just when you thought she doesn't wear colours at all — BAM! — Rooney wore a red, gorgeous dress by Valentino. It's not just shock for shock's sake; she looks like a slightly more aggressive version of Audrey Hepburn, but in a good way. I'm not pointing this out because she wore Givenchy — tons of people wear Givenchy(well, maybe not tons) and they don't get call Audrey Hepburn. No, Rooney's defined cheekbones and strong eyes might lead you into thinking that she might and could be the second Hepburn, but in reality she's all that, and more. She is already queen of life for us Millennium trilogy fans! She has the perfect dimples! And she's beautiful on the inside and out! Here's prove:

It became really easy to lose yourself. We live in a world where people are constantly telling you that you can't be who you want to be, no matter how much you tried. In fact, the only way to stay sane is to surround yourself with the people who cares and do the things you want to do, without giving a fuck about what other people think.

Until most recently, life have been a struggle. Closest friends suddenly became strangers on the streets; their thoughts are things that I could not interpret, things that I could not understand. As I tried to grasp onto details of things, they slip out of reach and turns into a blur.

Somehow everything went exactly back to the way it was, as if it was undisturbed and left in peace.

I closed my eyes. Not all hope is lost.

Year in Review: 2011

Last time I checked, it was still January 2011 and I was hungover from candy canes and macaroons. Procrastination be damned! I would finally be doing useful shit this year! Alas, no. Duh. Like Marcia would be doing anything productive! Before you know it, it's already December 30th and you ponder on all the things you did this year: nothing. How divine! In the fashion world, however, we were tangled in Versace for H&M, depression over John Galliano's dismissal from Dior, weddings that may or may not involve supermodels and Emmanuelle Alt for Vogue Paris.

Designer Collaborations Once upon a time, only some of us could afford the latest designs of Karl Lagerfeld. Or Giambattista Valli. Not any more. Although collaborations between designers and lower end brands started a while ago, this year it's better than ever. Maybe you love prints and studs together. Fear not, Donetella Versace's collection for H&M hit the stores last November. And who could forget about Missoni for Target craze that sold out in one day, which is full of zigzags and oh-so-soft cardigans? Maybe you're not a prints-person — Giambattista Valli's sophisticated designs for Macy's Impulse, or J Brand's collaboration with Christopher Kane might be a better match for you. Next year, we have Jason Wu and Doo. Ri designing for Target and Impulse, respectively, and I can't wait to stuff my closet with girly, minimalistic dresses.

Au Revoir, Galliano for Dior... Back in February, John Galliano was arrested for making anti-Semetic comments and got kicked out of Dior. And we are left with messes like the recent fall 2011 couture collection and the blah spring 2012 one full of signs from the New Look. We heard that the people from Dior had considered everyone from Marc Jacobs and Haider Ackermann to Alexander Wang and Jason Wu. All signs are currently pointing to Raf Simons, the mastermind behind Jil Sander. You might think that his simple designs are too simple for a house like Dior, but his feminine fall 2011 collection might change your mind.

Everyone is saying "I do" and "is it a girl?" Oh look, both of the Kates in Britain got married this year! One got married in a stunner created by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, while the supermodel one tied the knot in John Galliano and stole an editorial at American Vogue. Moving outside of Britain, we have the Victoria's Secret Angels. Lily Aldridge married Caleb of Kings of Leon and announced yesterday that they are expecting their first child. And so is Alessandra Ambrosio!

"It" girls are actually girls After starring in the 2010 film Somewhere directed by Sophia Coppola, Elle Fanning is literally everywhere. Besides making movies and snatching the covers of LOVE and W Magazine, she could be seen in the fall 2011 campaigns for Marc by Marc Jacobs or wearing statement pieces from Chanel and Marchesa. Fellow actresses Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld didn't do so bad, either. Hailee was the Miu Miu spokesperson for fall 2011, and Chloe was seen in everything from minimalistic Calvin Klein to Proenza Schouler. It's safe to say that we're gonna see a lot of this trio in 2012.

What You Should Wear for New Year's Eve

I never understand why people have a proclivity of wearing glitter in the holidays. Sure, you have excuses to look like a more well-dressed Nicki Minaj minus the plastic smile. And for those of us who sparkle everyday... we just sparkle even more. But wearing glitter for New Year's Eve is as groundbreaking as florals for spring - not. Now there, how about something else more eccentric?

However, since it's already, I don't know, December 29th I probably don't have much time convincing you to wear this enthusiastic dress that looks like a tablecloth. Just the other day Leandra aka. the Man Repeller talking about sequins and harem pants and me, being the usual hypocrite, was convinced to wear some sequins. Not just for New Year's Eve, but for the rest of 2012. Just kidding. For some reason the background of this collage was a photograph of random tree branches that I took last year, so I guess I am trying to convince you to stick tree branches into your outfit, too.

Trends: Forget Colour-Blocking, Here's Print-Blocking

One of the most shocking trends of 2011 is colour-blocking. In both the Spring and Fall season, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons sent a myriad of hot pink, burning orange and shocking blue down the runway in forms of creepers, minimal dresses and fox furs - you know, the cool stuff. For Spring 2012, however, designers decided to tone it down and declared colour-blocking in pastels and prints as the latest trend. Ladies and Nyan Cats, print-blocking, if you may.

Now I should get my shit together: what is print-blocking? Some unknown genius made up the term "colour-blocking" when people started wearing more than two colours together. Print-blocking is like putting prints together... except way more hardcore than colour-blocking because wearing prints from head-to-toe was orginally tacky ~~and still is~~. As I am typing this right now, I got a mental image of Kim Kardashian decked out in leopard and zebra every time I think of prints, and the effect is not exactly pleasing if you know what I mean. Not that I have anything against the Kardashians.

Fortunately, print-blocking is not trying to convince us to go what I called the Kardashian-way. The tribal prints at Thakoon are vibrant and effortless, and looks just like something a sophisticated scene kid would wear. With grandma socks from the 99¢ store of course. As usual, Rodarte's collection have signs of being inspired by the fantasy world. For Fall 2011, it was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Spring 2012, however, it seems to be contemporary paintings from the early 20th Century and sunflower fields. Although the collection seems distant from reality, there is one thing that is Rodarte contributed a lot to the shoe porn of Spring 2012. Speaking of shoe porn — Prada, Prada, Prada. Where do we begin? The mix of delicate embroidery, 50's poppy prints and retro car prints are nothing short of exquisite. At last we have Mary Katrantzou, the queen of digital prints. Majority of the collection, or rather, every assemble have some sort of prints, from colourful graphic ones to pastel florals.

Holy Moly, how can I express my love for these Thakoon prints without sounding like a moron? Actually, love would be an understatement. The paisley patterns and unconventional floral prints, bursting in intense shades of turquoise, orange and gold looks explosive over the collared shirts, line dresses and full skirts. This collection is practically a combination of colour-blocking, floral prints and sporty materials rolled into one. Thakoon Panichgul is a genius. And it matches your voltage-coloured hair, too.

The happy, optimistic sunflowers and cherry blossoms inspired the Mulleavy sisters for the latest Spring collection. Along with Impressionist paintings from artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Anna Boch, of course. Off the shoulder necklines, flowy skirts and delicate ruffles dominate the runway along with some bejewled, sparkling heels. You say unwearable; I say it looks ethereal. Honestly though, what kind of designer label gets support from Taylor Swift, Rooney Mara AND Beyoncé?

Although you might think wearing prints from head-to-toe is outrageous, let Mary Katrantzou change your mind. The Central Saint Martins graduate started experimenting with digital prints while she was still a student, and was recently awarded the Swiss Textiles award in 2010. From abstract, graphic prints to pastel florals, you named it, Mary Katrantzou got it. The floaty chiffon dresses, tailored suits and sheath dresses would look perfect on anyone from Anna Dello Russo to Alexa Chung.

~~It's Prada, bitches. Your argument is invalid.~~ Remember the Spring 2010 collection from Miu Miu? Nude ladies, white cats and little doves... the blogosphere died of excitement over this youthful collection designed by Miuccia Prada. And that was all three seasons ago! You might not be able to find any cat prints in this Prada Spring 2012 collection, but there is a lot of retro cars, poppy flowers and burning fire. Although it might be hard to imagine people like Kate Moss or Emmanuelle Alt to be wearing these cheeky dresses, never underestimate the power of 50's car prints... pin-up girl attitude not required.

Once in a while, you read a book that changes your life forever. I never find that book, but I did finished reading The Perks of Being A Wallflower a while ago. And by a while ago, I mean weeks ago. Charlie feels like the long-lost childhood best friend I never had. He spoke in that awkward voice, like the one I use when talking to people in general. It was very nostalgic really, and full of Rocky Horror Picture Show, getting stoned and writing letters to a stranger. Writing letters! On actually paper!?! I miss those old days, when people used to write something and send it to each other. I guess it's just a fade I'm going through, like a mid-life crisis of some sort except that I'm barely a teenager and already feeling very old.

This post actually doesn't have anything with sleeping for a thousand years, though it might be a nice treat after my French midterm. And this is coming from someone who wrote "I love crêpe!" when asked "When do you eat your birthday cake?" I've just decided to include ~~random~~ thoughtful inspirations of people with a bed-head and the dawn's first light on their eyelids. I never understand my generation's obsession with messy hair though. But then again, we can just add that to the list of things Marcia doesn't understand: Jersey Shore, why Nutella tastes so good, etc.

When I first started this blog, I have no clue what I was going to do and could barely come up with enough material for post. However, now my blog is so diluted with superficial things that I don't even care about. The more I tried to figure out who I am, the less individualistic I become. I don't care about comments or stats anymore. I don't care about how you wore that Theysken's Theory sweater either, because you just wore the same thing yesterday. There, we have it. No more bullshit that may or may not involved a pair of Alexander Wang Chloe heels.

Marry The Night: It's Not that I've been Dishonest, It's Just that I Loathe Reality.

Three Albums, 13 VMAS and 5 Grammys later, Lady Gaga reminds us again that she's the top pop star in the world with her new video for "Marry The Night." In the 14 minute autobiographical mini-film, she managed to fit complex, mind-twisting, inspirational and disturbing all into one; the result is nothing but beautiful. Perfect comes in the form of BeDazzlers, exploding cars, foot-tall pointe shoes and nurses with great asses in Calvin Klein. Enough said.

The video starts with Gaga being rolled into a psychiatric ward, which we've seen in the Prelude Pathétique a few weeks ago. She's brown-hair and looks miserable, despite wearing next season's Calvin Klein and Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. There, she spoke of the infamous line: "It's not that I've been dishonest, it's just that I loathe reality." Gaga constantly refer to her struggle between reality and fantasy in an artistic way, so the whole "Marry The Night" mini-film is basically dedicated to her struggles and the decision to dedicate her life to her career. Although many people say the nurse who snatches the cigarette out of her hand is the now-Gaga, the last time I checked Gaga doesn't look like a 50 year-old.

And then we came to the ballerina scene where she's... um... dancing like a ballerina. It's exactly like Nina Sawyers in Black Swan minus the psychology struggle, more of the "I want to be perfect" thing. In reality, this was when Gaga was signed onto Def Jam, her first recording label and she didn't want to mess up her musical career. The camera then fades away, and Gaga was brought back to her apartment. So she was, you know, just chilling on her bed naked and got the call that she's dropped. French subtitles appear on the screen as Gaga, her eyes full of tears, tried to convince them that she's an artist. Then she did all these thing people do when they are depressed, like covering her tits with a tampon and spilling honey cereals all over herself. I don't think the scene happened after the clinic scene, since it makes more sense if she's admit into the clinic after she was dropped from the label.

With her newly-dyed blonde hair ~~and looking a lot like Madonna~~, Gaga went inside a school that looks like Convent of Sacred Hearts as her back-up dancers look down at her with disgust. The overall effect is that you can really feel how people don't give her a chance and label her as an outsider. It's actually one of my favourite parts cause, you know, it never hurts to have some BeDazzlers. Somehow, she managed to be in a field full of burning cars(is there such thing as a car dumpster?), hanging upside down with her Louboutins sticking out. Gaga put in the cassette tape, and Marry The Night start playing. Just when you thought Alejandro and Telephone took long enough start, but I think the slow beginning builds up the suspense around the video.

Then shit finally got real when she starts dancing. This dance scene is like the one in Born This Way, except she's in a super-tight denim bustier and dancing in a studio of some sort. I would say this is literally the best scene in the video, but then again, very scene in the video is my favourite scene so I should just shut up right now. When the ballet dancer Dina fall down and Gaga helps her back up, it's the message of Marry The Night - "I won't give up on my life." Alternating between this dancing scene and the car-burning scene, it is Gaga's struggle to stay on top of her game. The Michael Jackson-esque scene(hello? Thriller?) was filmed at the 42nd Street subway station with Gaga in a leather bodysuit and blue lipstick. The scene is out of place and at an odd position nevertheless, but you can tell how important it means to Gaga because she was taken on by Interscopes and, here she is today. In between this street dancing scene and the ending, there's snaps of Gaga moving to Broadway with her piano, throwing up her chicken salad in the toilet and all the other details. At the end, Gaga is floating in midair and surrounded by flames wearing Paco Rabanne, which was the same designer she wore to the EMAs.

SPOTTED: Colour Separates

Although the term "colour-blocking" is no longer foreign in our ~~fashion~~ dictionary, many of us(such as yours truly, ahem) are not exactly sure how to wear colours. After wearing black for most of our lives, it's difficult to suddenly wear something bright and colourful again(Wait, you mean colours exist?!?) However, I did notice a lot of style setters are currently adopting a new trend: colour seperates. Instead of full-force colours, they chose to have one colour to be the main focus in their outfits. We might be wearing Easter pastel colours next spring, but in the mean time, let's enjoy living life in techno colours.

Interview: Ivania of Love Aesthetics

Recently, I had interviewed Ivania Carpio, the blogger behind one of my favourite blogs Love Aesthetics. With her minimalistic style and grey-lavender hair, Ivania's blog is always an inspiration, from her accessible DIY-projects to her unique views on fashion.

What motivated you to start your blog?

My ambition was to become a fashion journalist. I started reading blogs in 2005 or 2006 and was intruiged by this new independant medium. Fashion blogs give everyone a voice, no matter how small it is. I wanted to join the 'conversation'of fashion.

Who are your favourite designers and why?

Alexander Wang, I admire how consistent his collections are, he always sticks to the same aesthetic. You can comine pieces from different collections and they will still ft together prefectly.

Acne, is always right on spot very now, always ahead of the pack. Also love their magazine, the fact that it is a sponsored magazine only works in favor of it, it isn't packed with ads and is somewhat independant.

How would you describe your style?

Minimal, basic, scandinavian a bit odd.

Favourite trend(s) of Spring/Summer 2012?

Androgynous looks.

When you’re not blogging, what else do you do?

I'm in my third year of studying journalism, work on a freelance basis and am a mom of a 5 year old girl.

How do you incorporate trends into your style without looking too
“trendy”?

By not following them blindly but carefully picking what you like. If you stay true to yourself and your personal taste it will automatically all work together.

When you wake up in the morning, what affects the way you dress?

The Dutch weather pretty much dictates what I wear.

I love your grey hair and you’ve mentioned in your post that “I just turned 23 but am jealous of Kristen McMenamy's looks.” Are you planning on dying your hair another colour?

I started washing my hair with deluted lavender hair dye to get the yellow glow out of the grey, but I liked the lavender outcome so I'm sticking to that for now.

Where do you do most of your shopping at?

Secondhand markets and shops and designer pieces I get online. The outnet and net a porter are my favorites.

Hair: Arizona Muse's New Cut

Imagine how surprised I was when I found out Arizona Muse chopped off her hair. The first thing that came to mind was "Wow. She kinda looks like me that time I got my hair chopped off." When it finally hits me that no, she's not wearing a wig and that's her actual hair, I'm impressed by the risk she took. Arizona was known for her chin-length bob and strong eyebrows, but she looks fresh and surprisingly feminine in this new cut.

On the other hand, Tom Ford Cosmetics. Although I'm quite disappointed with both collections so far, the beauty collection is to die for. The beauty collection is full of rich, luxurious colours that might remind one of Studio 54 in the 70s.

Outfit: Minimal Approach

When I first heard about the existence of leather leggings, it's a mix between uncertainty and joy. Are they pants? How do you wear them? Would you look too kick-ass in them? I found the solution: just dress up as feminine as you can otherwise. No, I'm not going to tell you how to do that, because I'm confident that all you people out there knows the difference between tomboy and feminine. The almost crop-top and lipstick add the only shades of exciting colour in the outfit, and the boxy shoulder bag and the pumps are somewhere on the lines of schoolgirls in the 90s. All you need now are some cat-eye glasses.

Plaids are not Just for Camping, or Glamping

On cold days like today, I tend to close my eyes and pick the first things that come into reach. I'm not being lazy, but the proclivity of sad weather is very depressing after a while. Another fall uniform I'm constantly seen in is a plaid shirt. I don't rotate it with countless other ones, or wear it any other ways. It's always a plaid shirt and skirt with frayed hems. Pairing it with jeans sound like an outfit for camping, or glamping(glamorous camping) and much more weather friendly. But whatever. If I dress according to New York weather all the time, I'll be permanently in puffy vests and slacks.

My Versace for H&M Experience

Chances are that, you, along with most of the fashion bloggers in the world and I, was not invited to the oh-so-exclusive Versace for H&M launch party. What will a girl(or guy) do? You wait in the line for 4 hours before you were finally given the chance to shop the collection, which was exactly what I did yesterday. The waiting part is not actually the worst part. What really annoys me is that some of the people waiting on the line already have giant Versace for H&M shopping bags filled with just about everything, while the rest of us had as much Versace for H&M as the mannequins allowed.

When I first arrived at the store on 7th Avenue and 34th Street, I thought I made it just on time because no one was waiting outside the stores in the banisters. How wrong could I be. Almost immediately after entering the store, a girl in a Versace for H&M shirt attacked me and wrapped my wrist with a dark yellow paper bracelet, telling me I could shop the collection at 11:45-12:00. Even though 11:45 means a 4-hour wait, I'm just glad I actually got a bracelet and not forced to shop the leftovers of the collection. (But I'm still a teeny bit disappointed. I woke up at 6 in the morning for nothing? What kind of baloney is this? I should be able to predict this though, after spotting Versace for H&M bags at just about everywhere)

However, I did have a good time bitching with fellow shoppers of 4 hours on the unreliability of H&M, such as the lack of organization. I suggested a giant-ass clock that tells you what colour is up for shopping next. The lady with a silver bracelet talked about setting up separate stations for different colours. The fashion tweeter whose Twitter username I don't know practically tweet in furry when one of those lemon yellow shift dresses was taken. She also mention that she need to book a vacation cause the whole collection look so "summery." If you want a daily dose of laughter, come and live in New York.

At the end, I didn't buy anything much besides these printed leggings and the pair of earrings. Although I like many pieces from the collection, it's highly unlikely that I'll find a way to incorporate these dresses into my personal style and still makes it look Versace. Besides, if I bought all the pieces I like, I'll end up bankrupt and that's not exaggerating. Some of the pieces are very flimsy. when I was going over the entire collection with that personal shopper with red lipstick on my tail. The crocodile-palm tree printed skirt is the quality of American Apparel, and it's another piece that I skipped.

Remember those Polaroid in the 90s?

In most photographs taken in the 90s, there are a light tint of discolouring, of being oversaturated. Although it is not my favourite type of photos, it adds character to an otherwise common picture. So when I first saw the covers for i-D Winter 2011, that raw, unique effect brings out the features of the models that we don't notice otherwise, like Jourdan's eyes or Hailey's wicked smile. Even though it's probably just Photoshop, I'd like to think that these photos were taken with a Polaroid.

The idea of working backstage at a runway show is so exciting and intriguing: you're watching the creation of a collection spring alive. The best and most nerve-wrecking part of a designer's career must be the presentation of a collection. Whether it is a success or a failure are depend on the first looks, which is why most designers pay a lot of attention when presenting their new collections. At Alexander McQueen, the amount of preciseness can be seen at this video, along with the amount of people needed to create this spectacular collection. If only I can intern at Alexander McQueen...

Fall Uniform: Sweater and Jeans

Most of the time, I hate the word "uniform." The idea of having something chosen for you everyday sounds scary enough and requires as much creativity required for writing an essay on how to groom your cat. Even so, I do have a uniform for fall. Doesn't everyone? Something to wear on days when you're lazy or simply don't want to dress up like your favourite anime character. Just kidding. I don't even like anime.

Anyway, I was browsing on the web aimlessly when I spotted these pictures of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen wearing an almost identical outfit of sweater and jeans on separate days. I don't believe in coincidences, but sweater and jeans really are an awesome combo: it's comfortable, easy to style and understated. Just add a Starbucks cup.

Favourite Style Decade: The 90s Grunge Movement

If I had to pick my favourite style decade right now, it's difficult. Who can forget about the Roaring Twenties of the flappers, the Surrealist Movement lead by Elsa Schiaparelli in the Thirties, or the New Look of Christian Dior in the 50s? However, my personal style reflect mostly the 90s, the Grunge Movement. Consisting of mostly vintage dresses from the 90s, denim jackets and loose button downs, being influenced is an understatement. I was born in the wrong era. Well, being born in the late nineties does not officially make me a 90s kid.

The Grunge Movement The minimalistic trend goes all the way back to the early 90s, started by the designers behind Calvin Klein and Helmut Lang. Although wearing something simple and understated was not unheard of back then, it was a whole new concept, since everyone thought more must be better. Started as an continuation of the fashion in the 80s, and later extended into the 2000s, the 90s consist of mostly oversize sweaters, denim jackets, crop tops and chunky shoes. Dresses are most likely to be very, very short(hints of the 60s) and worn with tights.

Era of the Supermodels It's hard to talk about the 90s without mentioning its large crop of supermodels. According to a book I read, they refused to get out of the bed in the morning without getting a five-figure paycheck. Just when you thought celebrities today are divas... The most famous of them all are, of course, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum.But who could forget about Mariacarla Boscono, virtually an unknown back then, with her alien-like yet feminine face?

Courtney Love and Hole(which mean asshole, by the way) Courtney Love, along with her screaming music(literally), don't-give-a-fuck attitude and grunge-vintage style is practically the symbol of 90s style and the wife of Kurt Cobain(lead of Nirvana. Although I am a sucker for black in every season, I like throwing in some elements of surprise into my outfit, such as abstract prints and structural accessories. The Dion Lee skirt looks like a mix between an architecture disaster and space galaxies/nebulas, while the Mulberry scarf has an unconventional floral print. The 3.1 Phillip Lim adds structure and simpleness to the otherwise loose outfit. By the way, does anyone have a good suggestion for buying a coat? The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Unless you've been buried underneath a rock for the past view years, you probably heard of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, or The Girl who Plays with Fire, or The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Rooney Mara, recently on the cover of Vogue, beat tons of talented actresses to the role of Lisbeth. Lisbeth Salander, the bad-ass main character/hacker, is boyish and awkward, "a pale, anorexic young woman who has hair as short as a fuse. [...] On those occasions when she had been wearing a tank top, a dragon tattoo can be seen on her left shoulder blade." The movie was based on the novel Stieg Larsson, a Swedish novelist, and the H&M label is also based in Sweden(this is so predictable, but how am I going to start it?) So the costume designer of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Trish Summerville collaborated with H&M based on the character of Lisbeth. The collection, full of leather jackets, worn shirts, sweatpants(yes, sweatpants) and hoodies, is clearly the style of Lisbeth, but in a more feminine, sophisticated way.

Anyway, I just started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The mysterious tone of writing and the descriptive language really drawn you in, since I love reading mystery and detective novels. Can't wait for the movie, which is coming out December 21st. Just one more reason to go to the movies.

Although I am a foodie, I tend to stay away from food blogs because I can't bake to save my life, and looking at the photos make me feel sad. Imagine how surprised I am when I stumble upon The Vegan Stoner! Created by vegan designers Sarah Conrique and Graham Haynes, using their own quirky illustrations and recipes. Honestly, this is the only food blog I found so far without a recipe of less than 10 ingredients. These two recipes for granola bars and frappe are both easy to made and delicious. Second servings? Yes please.

Chanel, Givenchy, Celine and Louis Vuitton, all from the recent Spring/Summer 2012 collections.

For their spring collections, most designers choose to focus on unconventional ideas, such as strange fabrics and dark moods. No one exactly focus on colours, one of the most important aspects in fashion, until the colour-blocking trend slaps us in the face during the Fall 2011 runway shows. Although there are hints of bright colours lingering around, white is suddenly the it colour again.

However, each label combine the colour with new silhouettes and ethereal fabrics. It's not like they use wool or anything in the other spring/summer collections, but you can almost see the lightness in the way the fabric drapes. At Céline, Phoebe Philo cleverly combined militarism with the proportions of women, making the collection wearable, as usual. There's a lot of shirt dresses, almost like shoulder-pads but not exactly, cropped trousers and pleated skirts. The accessories are understated, but flows perfectly with the theme of the Céline brand and the show. White dominated the colour palette of the collection; most outfits are put together with black suede platforms and wide belts. This is one of my favourite shows from Céline: unlike the Spring 2010, or the Spring 2011 collections, the clothing are less structured and formal. Did I mention how much I love the contrast of the dresses and accessories?

Speaking of which: Givenchy. I'm not a bragger(just a shameless one) but I correctly predicted the rise of undersea-inspired collections, which first appeared at Marc Jacobs Fall 2011! The looks are tailored and dressy, and has an air of Givenchy when it's still designed by Hubert de Givenchy. Riccardo Tisci used a brilliant but simple palette of seashell-pink, white and black, which works very well with the combination of jackets, tight leggings and button-ups. The dresses, on the otherhand, resemble the silhouettes that are usually related to mermaids and other sea creatures. The fabrics consist of mostly meticulous lace and chiffon, along with the occasional netting. Even though the style of this collection is very different one the direction of Fall 2011, full of delicate tops that might remind you of Victorian style. Bonus: Natalia Vodianova opened the show, while Gisele Bündchen closed. Are supermodel status from the 90's finally coming back?

At Chanel, overall the collection is good: the style is very Chanel but not really. The colour palette consist of mostly white, copper and pastel colours. Ironic enough, Chanel's Fall/Winter 2011 collection is full of dark hues. Like Givenchy, it also takes inspiration from the undersea world(not in the typical, The Little Mermaid vibe. I have nothing against The Little Mermaid, besides it's oversexualized), but in a more feminine and sophisticated direction, with suits and shift evening dresses. The pearls, used as necklaces and belts, also remind me a lot of Coco Chanel's perfect mix between tomboyish and girly: you can still be kick-ass while being a lady. Otherwise, the swimsuits are similar to the ones in the past collections with a daring cut, and covered up in this weird, funny-looking plastic jackets(first Marc Jacobs, now Chanel! Plastics are coming back in fashion!?!) Lagerfeld used the usual fabrics the Chanel house is known for: layers of textured organza, tweed and knits with a twist: all of them has this quality of lightness to them. Florence Welch also performed, but honestly? Lungs totally kicks Ceremonials' ass.

According to my mom, who worked as a salesperson(woman?) at Lane Crowford, this Louis Vuitton collection is very 60, Mod-inspired. I agree, except some of the dresses imitate the style of the flappers(in the 1920's) Love how they station the runway with a carousel of horses and had these funny, nostalgic music. While looking at the collections, I just think of proms, fairy tales with happy endings, unicorns and china dolls. I think of unicorns all the time, so it's not a surprise, but I'm surprised by the amount of happy thoughts this collections created. According to Marc Jacobs, "After the hardness of Fall, we wanted something gentle and kind, fragile but strong, too." The use of eyelet laces, organza layers(again!) and exaggerated collars are very feminine, without being vomit-pink feminine. After looking at this collections, I won't be surprise if Marc Jacobs is going to Dior, although I prefer him at Louis Vuitton, because his strokes of sudden inspirations is different from the usual style of Dior(but after the recent fiasco of collections, I don't know what to expect from Dior anymore. Just rehire Galliano! But Dior is too arrogant to do so)

Last-Minute Halloween Costume Ideas

Maybe you don't have time. Or you just hate Halloween so much that you don't even bother. Oh, cheer up. Acording to Cady(of Mean Girls. Oh, the redhead Lindsay Lohan!), "In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it." Not that it has anything to do with my costume. I doubt being a depressed fairy godmother has anything to do with "slutty." Yes, a godmother who listens to Courtney Love and obsessed about American Apparel. Halloween is extremely competitive in my school. Not dressing up is not an option, so I might as well as be a unicorn so I'm literally made of glitter. Did my sarcasm lost you yet? Still there?

Being the overachieving Asian, I've been "brainstorming"(it sounds so much like a school assignment, I can't even...) about costumes since summer. There's a lot of things I want to be, but don't have a clue how to make a costume for it. How ARE you suppose to dress up for Tumblr? In a blue bodysuit and a giant Isabella Blow-inspired hat with Tumblr all over it?!?(I don't even have a blue background for Tumblr, I use Stylish plug-in) And why would anyone dress up as a tampon?

End up making a list of things that you should be for Halloween. So, if you get rich and famous because of all these brilliant suggestions, you own me an unlimited supply of Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Just kidding. I like Hershey's Kisses better.

My obsessions with flappers and the Roaring Twenties can be little extreme, but it's nothing compare to my favourite guy on Tumblr's addiction to Rick Genest. Anyway, what I learn from advance geometry did not go waste when I did a simple addition: Flapper + Rick Genest = Zombie Flapper. But this version doesn't require tattoos, permanent or temporary, just good makeup skills and the ability to move like a zombie.

Luna Lovegood is one of my favourite characters, ever since I read Order of Phoenix. Luna's creative, intelligent, but doesn't sacrifice her imagination for knowledge. You can practically see the dreaminess leaking out of her eyes in this still, with her cotton-candy puff of hair. And you saw those radish earrings, right? I can really imagine Luna wearing Mary Katrantzou, Rodarte and Versus, while channeling a weird witch vibe.

Pop Surrealism: Mark Ryden

During my studio classes today, we were discussing Surrealism, a movement of writing and art that began in the 19th Century. It concerns the displacement of objects, like putting a woman in couture gowns in an abandoned building. Pop surrealism has a similar idea, except they are even more weird and pointless in a way. I'm really intrigued by the works of Mark Ryden, who infamous quirky paintings became popular in the recent years.

Versace for H&M: the collection and how to wear it

Admit it, you saw this coming.

Half the blogosphere practically exploded, when the news came out the Versace is having a collaboration with H&M. I'm not exactly surprised, since most designers jump on the bandwagon for affordable lines(Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse, Missoni for Target, Lanvin for H&M. Ring a bell?) but Versace for H&M? Maybe it's just me, but growing up, I was obsessed with Versace when Gianni Versace was still designing it. Everything, from the in-your-face colours put together before colour-blocking even exist, to the abstract prints(Is there such thing as print-blocking? If yes, then Gianni Versace invented it.) For fashion history newbies, here's for future reference(click)

According to Donatella Versace in the press release, "For the collaboration we’ve brought back from the archives, as well as from more recent collections, some of the icons of Versace, such as the bright prints, the Greek key and daring cuts." I agree. The perfect balance between paying homage to the archives and translating the Versace brand to the younger audience. The prices don't hurt too, for those of us who can't afford to pay $4,000 for a single dress or bag. This is, perhaps, one of the best designer collaboration in recent years.

The mixture of different prints with similar colours are signature Versace, or print-blocking. The prints are very similar to the ones in the Versace archive. I like how the cropped jacket has puffy sleeves, and the rest of the outfit is very slimming. The belt and cuffs define this outfit too, while both of them give the outfit definiton.

This is probably my favourite look out of all the campaigns(too be honest, I was more focused on the photography than the clothes) With floral prints containing neon colours, but with a long-sleeved dress and leggings. Also, I like how they played with the perspective and the interior of the room to make such an unforgettable photo.

The flashy heart-pattern and fringes is kind of flashy and tacky, but this dress is one of those ironic numbers that manage to pass for fashionable. but the use of the green background is genius. The accessories for this collaboration is quite decent too: studs, leather belts, chunky jewelry and silky scarves with similar patterns.

This simple one-piece number reminds me of the infamous safety pin dress, minus the safety pins. It has a similar silhouettee and exaggerate the curves, making even the petite girls proud of what their momma gave them. Love the design and placement of the buttons, they look exactly like the ones you might find in a vintage store.

Saving the best for the last. You see what I did there?

The Versace and H&M collaboration is pricer than expected, but they use fabrics like leather and silk that give the clothes its characterisitics. Versace uses a lot of leather in all of their previous and present collections, so there's lots of leather jackets, leather dresses, you name it, they've got it.

Now the million-dollar question is: how to wear all of this?

Mix the same pattern together, and use studded accessories to take the va-va-voom to next level. Personally, I won't use the scarf as, well, just a scarf because that would make you age at least 20 years. Use it as a headband or belt to give it a 70's hippies feel. Or, if you're awesome at hairstyling, tie it into a head wrap like the one in the collage.

The floral, long-sleeved dress is one of my favourite pieces in the collection. Mixing the leather jacket and floral dress together created another signature Versace outfit, while the other understated(if you considered shiny and bright jewelry as understated) tone it down.

I put the bustier and leggings together as an attempt to be a tight jumpsuit, but since I didn't get to see the clothes up close yet, I'm not sure if it will work. The cropped and studded jacket gives it a bit of rocker chic, and the double belts add colours and definition. The colours of the bag matches with the palette of the outfit, and the suede shoes brings attention to the outfit instead.

Now that I'm done blabbering on(not exactly, since I'm doing a follow-up post on all the pieces) what's your favourite pieces in the collection and what are you gonna buy? Thoughts and opinions are appreciated in the comment below.

I never get the hang of layering. Either overdressing(in 5 layers of cardigan, sheer and leather) or under-dressing(2 layers are not consider as layering), I'm just not good at it. But I am one of those weirdos who understand better if I write(or type? oops...) it down, and being the nice and generous person I am ~~not~~, this is a how-to and tips post.

1. Don't wear all the same fabrics together, you will die of a heat stroke(tested out by yours truly) Mix different materials together - wool with sheer, leather and cashmere, latex and cotton... you get the point. Looking back, I have no clue why I even wore all those bulky sweaters, and people would tell me that I look like the Ghost of Fashion Disasters Past and got scared of me. Not sure why, but moving on.

2. Limit your layers, 4(or less) is enough(or not if you're living in Antarctica. Then I'll teach you how to wear layers so you won't look like a cross between a penguin and polar bear. Unfortunately, more is not always better, unlike sprinkled brownies . Likewise with fabrics, overdoing can be an eyesore to our sensitive Karen Walker-shaded eyes.

3. Mixing patterns doesn't always work, unless you're the Man Repeller on steroids. Or related to Anna Dello Russo. Choose a pattern you're planning to wear, whether it's floral, polka-dot or Mary Katrantzou craziness(that woman changed prints and patterns forever, cheers! It's no longer considered crazy to wear birds, flowers, snakes and chickens together) throw in accents of it through shoes, belts or tights.

4. Once upon a time, there's something called proportions. If you're wearing something chunky as a top, choose something slim and fitting for bottom. Flare jeans and sheer skirts doesn't look bad with knitted cardigans, in fact they look awesome, but you will be in risk of being a walking impersonation of a tree trunk, like the ones in Alice in Wonderland. Except you're a slightly more fashionable version.

Fashion Blogging is Overrated.

"Why are you saying fashion blogging is overrated, if you're blogging about fashion yourself?"

You would probably asked me after you read the title. Why is fashion blogging overrated if you're a fashion blogger? You just contradicted yourself. Let me explained:

It's both a good thing or bad thing that fashion bloggers are getting so much support over past 2 years or so. In fact, we gets much more attention from giant fashion houses and magazines than when we first started out. Bryanboy and Susie Bubble sit next to fashion legends like Anna Wintour in Paris Fashion Week. But after blogs like Man Repeller and Fashion Toast took off, and everyone think that they can be instantly famous by taking pictures of what they're wearing, and be buddies with Carine Roitfeld and Lara Stone.

Honestly?

Fashion blogs doesn't feel as genuine as they do at the beginning. Anyone can take a picture of what they're wearing and make up some bullshit description about it. Or look at runway pictures and dress up in trends. It's uncomfortable looking at all these blogs with posts upon posts that say nothing but the fact that they have a huge wardrobe. In the "old" days, one way to slowly capture fame is to have unique content that people want to read and update on a constant basic,then slowly building a readership and community. But most bloggers these days don't have time and patience, so they just suck up to top and popular fashion blogs.

Whenever I saw a comment like "OMG I LOVE your blog! Follow for follow?" or "Nice dress! xoxo, *insert name*," the chances of me judging you as a fame-hungry airhead is pretty high.

What do you think? (One more "OMG I LOVE YOUR BLOG!" and I'm moving over to Tumblr. Just kidding, Tumblr people can be superficial too.)

It had been 16 years since McQueen had sent the infamous "bumster" trousers down the runway, and one can't help but feeling sentimental. He incorporated intricate details into his collections, making fashion a form of art like no one had done before. Sarah Burton had figments of McQueen's vision, but she could never replace McQueen, ever. That could be quite difficult, considering that McQueen had already done almost everything.

This Spring 2012 collection is part Alexander McQueen archives inspired, part sea creatures(see, I told you ~~mermaids~~ sea creatures are making a comeback!) These headmasks caught my eye. McQueen was known for having outrageous headpieces, but I like Sarah Burton's soft and feminine approach.

What I learned from Anna Dello Russo about Style

If you asked which editor do I admired a year ago, the infamous Anna Wintour or Anna Dello Russo, I would instantly reply Anna Wintour, because she is the it fashion editor, controlling the most read fashion magazine in the world. A lot of things changed when I joined the blogosphere. Scrolling on The Sartorialist(before I realized how arrogant he is, but we'll get to that later) and Jak&Jil, I noticed this certain peculiar woman wearing cherries on top of her head. Even for a subversive person, it was an awkward ten seconds when I gasped at the screen with admiration.

Since then, my style had changed a lot. I still admired Anna Dello Russo's exquisite yet avant-garde personality, how she incorporate trends into her ever-changing personal style. Now, I compelled a list of things I had learned about style, from Anna Dello Russo herself, the master of styling.

Statement accessories can help draw attention to what you're wearing, from snakeskin boots to neon fur stoles.

Statement accessories You will hardly see Dello Russo in anything less than couture worthy, but what happen when she decide to dress down for a bit? She add a statement accessory(or more than one) to keep it over-the-top. In the right photo, the simple, fitting menswear-inspired suit is simple and elegant, so Anna decided to add a bit of trends to her outfit, using fur stoles from Prada's Spring 2011 collection full of energetic prints. Likewise, the snakeskin thigh-high boots draw attention to the minimalistic coat(the fur is, likewise, from the Prada collection, but in a slightly more tamed, pastel palette)

Dolce&Gabbana blouse with stars! Jeweled skirt! Yellow feathered clutch!

When in doubt, mix proportions. Sometimes, you just can't mix too much unexpectedness into an outfit, otherwise it will become a mess. Instead, choose where do you want people to focus on: your star-patterned blouse, bejewled skirt, accessories or shoes? In this case, Anna chose the skirt as the main focus of the entire outfit, and let the blouse and accessories to be the appetizer to the main course(as in, the skirt is the main course, and the accessories are the appetizer? Get it, no?)

Have something as your signature style, so people will know it's you. For some people, like Miranda Priestly of The Devil Wears Prada, is a white Hermès scarf. Anna's signature is a hat: any hat that looks quirky, from the cherries to flowers and pineapple(she loves wearing fruit as headpieces) I never managed to find something I love enough to declare it as my signature, but I got loads of time. Do you have a signature style, and why did you declared it as your signature?

Style does come from every price range. A price doesn't matter at all, if it's not something you called part of your style. Sometimes, I found my favourite pieces of clothing from thrift stores or secondhand for a surprisingly low price. Anna wears anything she considered interesting and intriguing, from pieces of Chanel Haute Couture to Lanvin ♥ H&M, and most recently Versace + H&M. Takes advantage of these designer collaborations as a way to increase the size of your wardrobe while not breaking the bank. Also, mix-and-matching pieces from different era is another way I found to identify your unique style.

Abbey Lee and Our Mountains for Pierre Balmain

I'm one of those people who can't helped but dressing like they're in the band, leather jackets, fishnets, band tees and cutoffs(with a twist of course. I hate being typical) Which is why I'm so excited about Pierre Balmain, the diffusion line that's coming this spring. This debut short film follows Abbey Lee and Our Mountains throughout New York City, from Brooklyn to Manhattan, in Pierre Balmain pieces. I had to admit that Abbey looks a tad bit like Taylor Momsen without all the dead makeup(which is such a different direction from her editorial for i-D F/W 2011)

Shot and direct by Inez and Vinoodh in black and white, it makes me wonder if I can go platinum blonde.

Versus Spring 2012: First Looks

The sporty assembles donned by the Versus models are really growing on me. The pleating and styles are signature Versace, while the understated accessories, simple necklines + hems and pastel palette gave it an air of youth. That might explains why the show was stated in a basketball court. Cheerleaders-meet-athletes, hmmm.

Note: I'm never a cheerleader myself. I'm dead clumsy. Besides, they're too cheerful and bubbly.

Calvin Klein Spring 2012: Simple fabric & delicate cuts

What is a better way to start off Spring 2012 with light, peachy tones for day and black for night? This Calvin Klein collection reminds me a lot of Spring a la 2008, which is the first time I picked up a fashion magazine and fall in love with Calvin Klein. The fabrics! The cuts! The way the fabrics hang! All the looks are minimalistic yet delicate, suitable for every women of every age(well, except for the dress with glittery starfishes all over it. That is the only thing I dislike in the whole exquisite collection)

This is another collection that relates to The Great Gatsby, besides Marc Jacobs. Carefully-cut slip dresses that come to the ankle(or mid-calf) with low, simple necklines are the main pieces of the show, alternating in colours of peach tones, black and silvery-blue. There are also occasional metallic and overcoats incorporated slyly into the collection, accessorized with simple, platforms in varying shades.

For next spring, I'm honestly giving minimalism more attention.

No one dresses more quirky than Alexa Chung, the British trendsetter who sets the fashion blogosphere and photographers crazy after her style. For this Madewell collaboration, she puts her signature boy-meets-girl style into affordable designs. Among the lace dresses, denim trousers and skirts, this pouch really caught my eye with its strange yet interesting pattern of eyes. At $25, it's stylish and artistic(not to mention quirky), but won't break your bank account. What else can you ask for?

Marc Jacobs Spring 2012: Plaids, latex and flowy dresses

There is always one thing I love about Marc Jacobs' collections: expect the unexpected. Whether it is on the fetish policewomen for Louis Vuitton or the infamous Perry Ellis grunge collection, the guy takes inspiration and take a new spin on things. Even though the fashion world wasn't as keen with Marc Jacobs and his designs, as they had been years ago, I still find his designs innovative and meticulous. Shorts, skirts and skin-revealing is something expected for spring, but this collection take notes from the masterpiece of book The Great Gatsby(it's set in the 20's during the Prohibition with a lot of flappers)

You're probably think "How exactly is that related to fashion, Marcia? Just get to the point and talk about the fashion!" I'm not, so you might just click over to one of your other blogs and look the the pictures. The runway was set in a dance hall decorated with retro lightbulbs, where the models were waiting behind a heavy velvet curtain. When the spotlight came on and roll onto the first model, I'm just full of shock(well, in a good way, a good surprise? Nevermind.) Everything is so romantic and fantasy-like, it didn't feel real at all. But that was the purpose, according to Marc Jacobs himself: "I didn't want it to feel real." It didn't feel real at all.

The Roaring Twenties were an amazing time, not only for fashion but also feminists. We stopped wearing those tiny corsets and wore clothes that you can actually walk in(can you believe that people used to have 16 inches waist? It sounds horrible, can you actually eat in it?) When you mixed history and The Great Gatsby together, you get romantic-themed fashion. There are a series of boxy, cropped jackets, dropped-waist flapper dresses with socks and plastic cowboy-boots and sequined-checked turbans. Mixed in with denim suits, sporty sweatshirts and techno-gingham prints(on coats and skirts)

Romantic, yet a bit of nostalgic and unexpected. Exactly what a fashion collection should be, evoking different thoughts and emotions. Quick question: would it be far-fetched to wear techno-gingham with Surface to Air boots?

Slowly floating away

Usually, a French-inspired film, fashion or not, leaves me slightly nauseating. I went through a French phrase when I was little and it became out of control. And most films did not capture that true spirits of "Parisian chic"(or whatever you call it) and it became a wreck. They usually involves balloons, a couple and a lot of unnecessary pink.
Sofia Coppola is different though. Her approach is quite intriguing, or I just think like that because she directed The Virgin Suicides(I still haven't read it, I barely read anything this summer, I'm ashamed to say, expect for rereading the entire Harry Potter series and fashion magazines) I like how she takes the most natural moment of model Maryna Linchuk and it went very well with the retro outfits and location.
The end is cheesy, but don't you want to spray on Miss Dior Cherie and float away in a bunch of balloons? And you still didn't throw up, yet.

What I learned from Influence by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

On the small list of celebrities I admired, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are somewhere in the middle. Before you left a particularly nasty comment and left my site, thinking I'm about to cook up some sort of typical bullshit story about how they changed my style forever blah blah blah and how they became my style icon, I think I should explain.

Note: I've notice there's a certain stereotype going on in the fashion blogosphere and we had to like the style of MKA, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and other celebrities. Since stereotypes are created to be broken, I'm determined not to post all the celebrity styles on here.

A week ago, I received a tweet from Net-a-Porter mentioning that I won the giveaway of Mary-Kate and Ashley's book Influence. I was fairly excited because I was running out of coffee table books for inspiration, and was always meaning to check the book out but never got the chance too. But my relationships with any books associated with celebrities/magazines always ending up having the same fate: I hate them all. Usually, X celebrity/magazine paid Y writer to "finish" Z book. Just like a algebraic equation. And my impressions that all celebrities are arrogant, money-sucking prats doesn't help either. But flipping through Influence is quite a different experience(don't laugh, I KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO) I was expecting endless pictures and short interviews, but instead pages upon pages full of columns and columns of small text jump out at me, inviting me to explore the broad world of artists and designers. I'm currently intrigued by Bob Colacello, George Condo and Richard Prince. Their work would put many mainstream artists today to shame.

5 things I've learned reading Influence

Instead of reading endless references of your favourite photographer, just grab a camera and start taking pictures. Learn the technics and skills along the way, your point of view and niche will develop slowly. You are never to young or too old to do what you love, just get start. Time's a bitch and before you know it, you're 33, living in your mum's basement and still obsessed with that picture of Kate Moss with lights between her legs. (here.)
"In compromising your vision, you give up on your integrity and individuality." I tweeted that earlier today while thinking about bloggers with campaigns and promotions for ~~fashion~~ brands. Funny enough, now I quoted Terry Richardson ",You try not to compromise, but I think the key is if you do something and you feel good about it, no matter what it it, that's the greatest satisfaction - to do something and be proud of it." and later on "You'd like to think that everything will be how you want it to be, and you wouldn't compromise, but the minute you say yes to something, that's a compromise. The minute you start to work with other people, you're compromising, because when there are other people involved in your vision, it becomes different." Rephrasing my tweet, it turned into "Don't lose your vision while compromising, otherwise your individuality is lost."
You don't do something to impress other people, you do them to please yourself. The ability to impress can only go so far if no passion is involved. If you put energy and time into something, people take notice and give you the attention you deserve.
Be revolutionary, but still study the trends and influences in the past and present. How can you rebel against something you don't understand? Study them and add your own take to it, don't be a rebel without a cause(that is pointless in a way) Besides, if everyone has a similar vision and approach, that can be quite boring, wouldn't it?
You really need to love what you are doing. I started blogging because I want to work in fashion later on in my life, and blogging had introduce me to a world I never thought existed. I saw a lot of bloggers who are only doing it for the fame, and it shows through with several posts a day, lack of good content and quality and no individuality at all. You need to go to sleep and can't wait to wake up because your job is what you love doing, whether it is photography, blogging, designing, illustrating or writing. "You have to take time off if you have a boring job. But my job is perfect. what I like about the job is the job." said Karl Lagerfeld. You really need to love it, and believe in it.

MTV VMAs 2011 Style

Did anyone watch the Video Music Awards on MTV last Sunday? Most were watching for who won the awards. Some were watching for who wore what. I was watching for both, though I don't think the Britney Spears tribute or Amy Winehouse tribute did them any justice.

Jo Calderone(in suits by Brooks Brother and Dior Homme) taught us that simple is sometimes the best way to stand out, and how to truly open the VMAs. He accepted the Moonmens on behalf of Gaga, cause she couldn't come. You shouldn't spill beer on the floor Jo, because that's how you trip and fall.

Usually, when someone wears something completely bizarre, they usually have a reason for it. But somehow, I did not manage to find the reason behind Nicki Minaj's outfit. Even if it was very weird, you have to admit it makes pretty good press for her.

Katy, Katy, Katy. Last year's simple dress works much better. This year's frequent changes(about 5 from what I count from Tumblr) was somewhat like VMAs 2009, in which Lady Gaga changed into 6 different outfits, almost all were somewhat related. But an Atelier Versace Japanese Lolita dress, a purple Tom Ford lace number and a Dior Fall 2011 couture dress don't have a common theme(unless you count wacky, which I'm for) In face, her fair clashes horribly with the Tom Ford dress, and the yellow cubic head piece looks familiarly like a cheese cube. I know for a fact that the Dior collection is inspired by many themes of Dior, like the geometric aspect, but it doesn't stop it from looking like a gigantic cheese cube. (I can't resist adding, but rather like an appetizer to Gaga's meat dress)

Beyonce in Lanvin one-shoulder, knockout. It is a stunner and shows off her baby pump(Destiny's Child, ahem) Later on, the tuxedo outfit she wore when performing and broke the baby news is sophisticate and simple. While I earned respect for Beyonce dancing in heels while pregnant, steal Jessie J's chair you're pregnant!(sorry Jessie J, I do love your vocals in between commercial breaks)

One of the rare times, Britney looks better than she had in years with those highlighted locks and Moschino sequined dress. Not so sure about the shoes, but it looks better in the second picture.

In a figure-hugging, safe number and signature puffy up-do came Adele. Adele is the kind of woman that looks good in classic clothing. I can't really imagine her in anything risque.

IFB Project #11: Evolution of Fashion Media

I am always constantly visiting and discover new fashion sites and blogs, and reading new fashion magazines. It's hard not too, especially when living in New York where there's a store every few blocks away, or having the Internet at your fingertips. However, I do have my favourites and decided it's the perfect time to make a list when I saw IFB Project #11. I hope you enjoy my picks just as much as I do.

1. LOVE Magazine: The bi-annual magazine by Katie Grand, "one of the most powerful stylists in the world" and a person I admire very much. In each issue of LOVE, they have a single theme that they will focus on. From the highly unique styling to the interesting subjects being featured in each issue, it is my favourite fashion magazine. The articles are very much related to the fashion world and a variety of artists.

2. Fashionista.com: When I first read The Teen Vogue Handbook(hey, I was 11 something!), they mentioned its former editor and their signature collages. I was young and never heard of Photoshop, not knowing how to make them yet, so I decided to visit the site. To this day, it is the only site I relied on for fashion news. The writers and contributors always have a sense of humor that can crack me up, and I can stay on its website for hours, browsing through its broad archive.

3. V Magazine: It's the younger sibling of Visionaire, which of course I cannot afford every issue, so I relied on V Magazine. With an inventive and avant-garde way of styling, it is my second favourite magazine and much more affordable and accessible than the LOVE Magazine(Barnes&Nobles doesn't carry LOVE) The latest cover always catch my eyes, but I don't know why I didn't get a subscription yet.

4. Raspberry and Red: I found Weronika's blog through Teen Vogue's Blogger of the Moment blog last year, and I had been following her casual yet chic style since then. She taught me that fashion can come at any price, you just need to find a way to style it. I love browsing through her archive from time to time.

5. The Coveted: When I found Independent Fashion Blogger, I also love Jennine's blog The Coveted. Her simple approach toward fashion and beauty leads me to having great expectations for my style when I am older. She is one of the bloggers who truly have an opinion, and one that I value.

6. Style Rookie: Tavi's blog is the first fashion blog I read before I started my own blog. Since we share a love for Sassy, Courtney Love, Miu Miu and Proenza Schouler I was inspired to start my blog and I want people to listen and value my opinions on fashion. Anyway, her blog is full of sarcasm, vintage fashion finds and her life as a teenager in high school, and it's another blog that I love browsing through its archives.

7. Love Aesthetics: It's a funny story how I discovered Ivania's blog. Since I follow Lulu and Your Mom, another of my favourite blogs, on Formspring. One day, someone leaves Ivania's URL in Lulu's Formspring and Lulu said she really like it, so I decided to check it out. Her simple posts and style is refreshing in a blogosphere full of similar style and blogs. Ivania also has a strong opinion about her style, and is not easily influenced by others. Her dislike for Jeffrey Campbell is particularly outspoken, since most fashion bloggers have a pair of Litas, and that does not include me.

8. InStyle: Funny enough, I first got this magazine from my parent's friend after she was finished with it. I like the magazine's wide variety of content, from fashion to lifestyle and more. They values their reader's opinions and always include them in an issue. In the current issue with Beyonce on the cover, it has an article of layering that leaves me full of ideas to dress for fall. Since I'm still a complete newbie in beauty, I also delighted by its beauty section, which is full of tips and new ways to wear make up.

9. Lulu and Your Mom: Her Californian style is simple yet full of surprises. Lulu's blog is my favourite blog and I always fall in love with the music videos and inspiration that she posts. Her Tumblr is also full of vintage photographs and her ongoing writing career(she writes about love and the Internet, and they can also be read on Lulu and Your Mom. They are straight to the point, and brings me a feeling of nostalgic.

10. Fashion Toast: Rumi is almost the queen of fashion blogosphere, there's not denying it. But something about her style, the chic, undone glamour of her outfits that drawn me toward her blog. She stays true to her style, even though she had became famous for it and attended tons of fashion shows.

NK Style Crimes

When I was younger, I thought dyeing my hair a bright, brilliant colour is a taboo. I mean, being raised in an Asian family, hair dyeing, along with tattooes, are considered "scene-kid like and very inappropriate." But people changed over time. Why else would I be sporting Manic Panic on my hair? Or Hayley Williams and Lady Gaga would not make an appearance on my iTunes(by the way, Gaga dyed her hair back to blonde and currently receiving anti-bald treatment. Too much dyeing can cause excessive hair loss...)

I found this campaign really interesting. Sometimes, a campaign involving 5 plus hair colour, clearly retouched and a model who doesn't look like herself is not exactly called groundbreaking. But I think it is something about Sara Blomqvist, her confidence and poses, that make it truly works.

M.A.C. Semi Precious Collection

Considering the loads of Tumblr and blogs dedicated to Brazil-born bombshells(which is a lot, for those who don't know), it's unsurprising why most of them have an amazing career and made Brazil famous for their gorgeous, supermodel-potentials(Gisele Bundchen and Adriana Lima, anyone?)

On the other hand, M.A.C. is my favourite beauty brand. Their campaigns and collections are really simple or really weird, and it's hard to think that M.A.C is owned by Estée Lauder. One of their collaborations, Viva Glam, raises money for their AIDS fund, and they also had a collaborations called Bloggers' Obsession, a series of eye shadows and lip colours created by beauty bloggers.

Inspired by the easy beauty of these bombshells, M.A.C. came up with a limited edition mineral makeup called Semi Precious. A series of lip colour, blushes, powders and brushes with colours that are probably the best for summer, but during winter, I like lightweight and moisture make up because of the very annoying weather of New York. You can either put yourself in hydrated lotion all the time during winter or deal with the fact that your skin is very, very dry, bleeding cracking lips, and that you look like a dried-up cattle flower.

I like the lip colour, even though some of it looks like the kind you get in a beauty sample bag. But I had long learned not to judge a book by its cover(um, in this case, a lipstick by its colour? It rhymes...) and it probably would look very different on an actual model. The blush, made of baked minerals, enhances your non-existence checkbones into Gisele-like cheekbones. They even have limited edition brushes, just thought you ought to know, probably makes apply make up much more easier, for a newbie like me.

Who can ever miss Kate Moss's wedding when almost the entire blogosphere was talking about it? Now, from Vogue itself by Mario Testino, the official snapshots from her wedding. Above, Kate Moss with her 8 year-old daughter Lila Grace. She looks like Kate, but not as much as 13 year-old Lottie Moss.

You know, Lottie Moss, Kate's sister? Second from the left. Isn't she stunning. The dresses by Mr. Galliano are quite amazing, although I think it is quite understated for an icon like Kate.

Finally, Kate Moss covers the September of American Vogue in a knockout, Alexander McQueen gown. Although she is a supermodel, Moss is placed on the cover rather because of her fame, not because of her model status. A mainstream magazine, like American Vogue, would never put a fashion model on its cover, even Vogue favourites Karlie and Raquel, let alone Coco Rocha or Frida Gustavsson. It would be quite interesting to read the interview, since we all know Kate Moss rarely talks, and her editorial with designer weddings gowns would no doubt be exquisite.

Personally, I never find platform boots practical for living in New York. Riding on the subways or half-running on the rough sidewalks are not suited for those beauties. However when I stumbled on these Acne leather ones, it's love at first sight. The thick sole makes it no doubt comfortable, while the leather is part scene-kid and part minimalism chic. Simple never feel so amazing.

Fall 2011 Couture Fashion Week: The Young and the Restless

If you are stalking Fall Couture 2011 Fashion Week like I do, you will probably notice the stunning collections and its awesome-dressed attendants. I mean, look at Daphne Guinness. She's pulling a Ms. Stefani Germanotta, with shiny heel-less shoes with a jacket that looks like a lameshade(Man Repeller would approve) But still, this comes for a woman who was friends with Isabella Blow, so it's justified.

When I saw this, "I'm busy." Well, you're sparing time to get your photo taken. *sigh* Leather jackets.

Who knows redheads can look so amazing in Miu-Miu like prints? And chit-chatting to girls wearing red with leopard prints. It was a bit too much for me, but awesome cut-out back.

Who knows Anja Rubik's legs can be so irresistible? Casual supermodel walk......

Christopher Kane t-shirt dress. It's not like I'm jealous or anything, but the Christopher Kane collection is really great and all and she looks really good in it with bag so, um, yeah.

BFFs are going to fashion week. Who knows making sure the heels are not stuck in the gravel be so fun?

I think I should show you guys my hair before it starts fading again from the Manic Panic, along with inspirations with why I dyed it. Red hair is one of the rarest hair colours in the world, and it seems fierce, even reckless. As soon as I spotted it on Hayley Williams(in the picture her hair is orange-red...), Lulu Chang from Lulu and Your Mom and London scene kids, I know it's time for a change from the typical Asian route of blonde/brunette.

Givenchy Fall 2011 Couture

Givenchy is always full of dark, dark couture. But Riccardo Tisci finally found the light in the darkness. The light itself being "very pure and soft and fragile; a romantic dream." For Givenchy Fall 2011 Couture, he delivered another exquisite couture collection, truly fit for a princess and I wouldn't mind it much if one of them become my wedding dress in the far, far, distant future(add that to the list next to the Alexander McQueen, in fact, why not the whole collection? I'll have 9 changes during my wedding)

The simple yet delicate palette of ivory, pale beige and white hint innocence, pureness and fragile. In almost all the designs, the exclamation point focuses on the top. A heavily-embroidered top is most likely to be pair with a sweeping tulle skirt and structured sleeves. Tisci's signature fringes became a waterfall of fine, golden chains. Most of the beauty is concentrated in the details. The carefully placed crystals reflect light, transforming it into an angel-like gown. Balanced by a simple belt at the waist, it prevents the gown from being shapeless and display one's feminine curves. The simple neckline prevents the overall result from being cluttered.

This new, rebellion toward haute couture certainly makes it fit for a futuristic, twenty-first century princess. Riccardo Tisci had not only be avant-garde while designing this collection, but he also preserves the classic designs of the couture house of Givenchy.

Recipe: Polka dot cheesecake

Who can ever forget about lovely polka dot? On a sweet summer dress, runways of Marc Jacobs... and cheesecakes? I always been a bit of a foodie since I was little, and one of my favourites of all is probably the cheesecake. Polka dots AND cheesecake? Delicious. When I saw the recipe on The Baker's Daughter, I know that I have to try it as a summer project.

How to Recipe: Polka dot cheesecake

You will need these:

Crust
1 cup Graham crumbs

¼ cup cocoa

2 tbsp sugar

¼ cup melted butter

Filling

16 oz softened cream cheese

½ cup sugar

2 eggs

2 oz dark chocolate, melted

1 tsp vanilla

2/3 cup sour cream

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.

2. Grease a 7 X 7 inch square pan and line it with parchment paper.

3. Mix the graham crumbs, sugar, cocoa, and melted butter together in a small bowl, and press into the pan.

4. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add the sugar. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the eggs one at a time on low speed. Add vanilla and sour cream. Scrape the sides of the bowl one more time and beat until smooth. Reserve 1/2 cup of the cheesecake filling and set aside.

5. Melt the 2 oz of dark chocolate in a bain marie (a bowl placed over a pot of barely simmering water), or in a microwave on low temperature. Stir the melted chocolate into the reserved 1/2 cup of cream cheese filling.

6. Pour the plain batter into the pan, smoothing out to the edges. To make the dots you will need a pastry bag fitted with a round tip. Fill the pastry bag with the chocolate cheesecake mixture. Gently press the tip of the bag into the smoothed out plain cheesecake and squeeze the bag forming a dot. Place dots all over the cheesecake until the chocolate mixture is used up.

7. Place in the oven and bake for 1 hour. Turn off the oven and leave the cheesecake in the oven for an additional 1 hr. Refrigerate for at least 24 hours. Freeze if you wish for about 1/2 hour before cutting. Use a knife dipped in hot water to help when cutting.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty//Master of His Designs

It had been a year since one of the fashion legends, Lee Alexander McQueen, passed away in February. Known for his boundary-breaking fashion and unexpected themes, Alexander McQueen is always one of my favourite brands in my heart(ah, who can forget those Armadillo shoes? Or the corsets that made Abbey Lee fainted? OR the flowers falling out of the dress from Spring 2007? My favourite McQueen moments ♥) And if you are just like me, and just happen to be in New York at the moment, go the the Met Museum and visit the Savage Beauty exhibition.

Highland Rape, Autumn/Fall 1995/96. According to McQueen, it actually represents the rape of Scotland by England, instead of the raping of women. (Note: to those who don't know, McQueen was Scottish-decent)

No. 13, Spring/Summer 1999. Remember the two robots spraying paint on Shalom Harlow and her white dress? The spraying is like a piece of art itself to me. Shalom Harlow was trained as a ballerina, so the whole thing is as dramatic and graceful as it can get.

Sorry for using photos from the Met website, but no cameras are allowed at the Met unless you want to get scream at by menacing-looking Met security guards. Enough said *cough*cough*

Irere, Spring/Summer 2003 - "Oyster" dress. McQueen was inspired by a shipwreck at sea, like the girl is drowning. They called it a piece of couture at full force and reference to the skills at which McQueen learned at Givenchy. I just want this as my wedding dress.

Sarabande, Spring/Summer 2007. Described as darkly romantic, McQueen used flowers because they die. It was an amazing dress, including in which the flowers kept falling out in presentation. The model looked so awkward, she's trying to be professional while her flowers were falling out. Teehee.

Widows of Culloden. Autumn/Winter 2006/2007. Based on the final battle of Jacobite Risings, the collection is full of exaggerated silhouettes inspired by the 1880's, as seen above. I read in Vogue that McQueen and Burton cut out the pattern of the lace to create their own pattern since McQueen hated gathering.

Showcasing McQueen's work from his start to last collection, which was almost finished until he took his own life. His Central St. Martins grad collection, was discovered by the late Isabella Blow and kinda his first big break. Structured jackets and careful, delicate embroiders became a McQueen signature from then on.

The Girl Who Lived In A Tree, Autumn/Winter 2008. Inspired by queens of England. Novelty red, full of rich detailed embroideries and accessories. Dreamy, romantically nationalistic, well-dressed fairy queens. According to internet sources, the show is a fairy tale, about a girl dressed in beautiful black rags(first half of the show), met her prince and started descending from the tree. I wish I live in that fairy tale.

Angels and Demons(as named), Autumn/Winter 2010/2011. A look into the Dark Ages, and reminding to find light in the darkest of times. The collection was finished by Sarah Burton.

The accessories are put along side some of the most dramatic presentations(chess game of Spring/Summer 2005, anyone?) Most famous accessories such as the Armadillo shoes(which Lady Gaga wore in the infamous "Bad Romance" video), the Philip Treacy butterfly hat(a homage to the late Isabella Blow, which the collection was inspired by, Spring/Summer 2008) and countless others.

So, promise me, go to the Met and paid your respect to this great artist?

What would you do for perfect skin?

Once upon a time, say, 5 years ago, I was blessed with the girl's best accessory: perfect skin. No pores, no pimples, just smooth and the right shade of tan, like the skin in the M.A.C. campaigns. Shameless self bragging, but I was easily the envy of the class, along with my pin-straight hair and slim figure. But that was obviously because I was nine, young and carefree, not because of my lack of using any skincare at all.

Flash-forward to now, in which I am hitting my early teen years. Gone was the perfect, smooth zit-less skin. In their place are an oily, greasy forehead and, God forbid, pinkish pimples scattering on all the wrong places. No more burying my head into the book, and I'm forced to face the music, as know as the pre-puberty bad skin. During spare time, instead of going out like a normal person, I will drop by at the nearest drugstore I can find and try to learn the difference between a cleanser and a moisturizer(note to beauty gurus and bloggers out there: I know you're probably shaking your heads disapprovingly at me right now, but sadly, I'm one of those people who never touch face creams unless I'm forced to)

However, starting a few steps behind everyone in beauty does had a disadvantage. What kind of products should I use? Everyone has different ideas, "You should use *insert product* from *insert brand*! It's the best *insert product* you can ever use!" with such enthusiasm that I"m convinced that they are secretly the PR's for the brand. Eventually, I end up doing what most people did: test and try everything I can afford and get until I can find the perfect ones for me and my skin.

After you register, it shows you how to style the current t-shirts, which are Fillmore, No...is a full sentence, Melrose and Prince, in Modern, Classic Chic and Runway. I got Runway and it shows innovative, risk-taker, AVANT-GARDE, experimental and visionary, and each style got its own adjectives. My favourite? Probably Fillmore or No...is a full sentence. It's June already! Floral sundresses, beaches and Vogue U.S.! Yes, American Vogue, I know I haven't talk about it in a while. For the June 2011 issue, there's this vibe about its editorial that changes my views. Since, say August 2010, the magazine had feature the same cast of model over and over, boring styling and dull posts. But no, not this issue. This issue had an editorial called America the Beautiful, about the places American Vogue editors would like to visit. The styling is themed with the location. Much more different models like Raquel Zimmermann and Isabeli Fontana(good old super-models, for once) Maybe for once, Vogue would be back to its former glory? Can't wait for the July 2011 issue.

Edit: Sorry about the lack of posts lately! Down side of being a student in New York is that you never have enough time to do what you want to! So I'm really back after slacking off in May!
